June 25, 2004:

I updated the above link with a lighter blue background, but the PNG still seems to make it a couple of shades darker. Hopefully I'll have more luck with JPEG later.

I'd also like to welcome our newest member "cid." I apologize for not noticing you earlier as I usually visit the forum atleast once per day.

And my two days off are nearly over, tomorrow begins another roller coaster of a work week.

January 8, 2005:

No I haven't forgot about The Project, but if you've been following this thread you would realize my work load has been very heavy. And that was just the Summer, I just finished my Fall semester which was even heavier.

The good news is I only have one lab based class this semester compared to three. So I intend to work on The Project more often. But, I can't get my hopes up too much as the remaining three classes are heavy writing classes.

The good news is BGCM has finally gone live! A great big round of applause should go out to Bobn64 for hosting the domain name www.bubblegumcrisismovie.com.

However, the site is still under redesign, and I apologize if some of the previous example links are broken. I had to clean out my University webspace. As usual as I create new mock ups of the latest designs I will post them.

Regards,

January 19, 2005:

I currently have about 10 sketches of the next layout. I actually haven't begun digital implementation yet, but it's going to be a fair departure from even the previously posted layouts.

What I have been doing is trying to find a way to implement PNG transparency in IE. IE supports PNG files, but not PNG-24 with transparency. This creates a problem since the new layout is designed to be a vertical scroller with a repeating background. The main repeating background doesn't require transparency; however, the CSS overlapping divs (think layers) will in order for the main background to blend with the foreground.

I have found several solutions, PHP, JavaScript and CSS. I haven't found a PHP solution that can be applied to external CSS or background properties. I could use JavaScript, but JS can be disabled destroying the layout. So, through process of elimination I'm left with more CSS hacks, which is fine. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't make it that easy. Every solution uses a lesser know DirectX IE plugin called AlphaFilter. Although this does fix the transparency issue, the filter can only be applied to an image once. This means that subsequent tiling images are ignored, thus the transparency does not tile with CSS background properties.

This effectively kills all attempts to tile PNG transparent images leaving me just a little p'd off. The only solution that I have been able to find is relatively simple, but brutal. I use the same CSS hack, allowing every browser that supports PNG-24 transparency (FireFox, Netscape, Opera) to see the layout as designed in my graphics editor, but give IE equivalent transparent GIFs. And if anyone has seen the hard-edged, non anti-aliased corners of a GIF, well you can begin to imagine how ugly this layout will look for 93+% of vistors.

As for the main background image, it's going to be based on some of my earlier layered digital works and the HUD (heads up display) of the Knight Saber's helmets. It seems as if each hardsuit has a variation of Sylia's HUD, so I've combined them into one common design. Since the main background image is designed to fit a browser window of a 800x600 screen it will be slightly out of scale. I intend to rebuild the same background image as a wallpaper in two formats: as seen on the web and as a HUD. The wallpapers will be designed for 800x600, 1024x768 and 1600x1200.

As previously stated I already have one wallpaper designed for the next launch. That one will be tweaked and be available for download before the HUD.

January 23, 2005:

I think I've spent more time on The Project in the last week than I have the last few months ;D .

I've uploaded a few samples of what the HUD wallpaper is going to be like. This will also be the basis for the repeating background on the new site design. Sorry, but the HUD is still in development, this is just a taste:

1600x1200 ~ 1MB
1024x768 ~ 500KB
800x600 ~ 350KB

They are JPGs at optimized 100% maximum compression, so if anyone knows how to decrease file sizes further without dramatic loss in quality please let me know.

For those that have been requesting that the site design be lighter, hopefully these samples will do just that. Especially since the HUD will be blended for lighter blues and whites, further brightening the background image. There will also be some complimenting yellow/orange/reds as well for a little diversity.

Hope you enjoy the samples. As always if you have any concerns or suggestions let me know.

Regards,

I'm facing a reinstall of Windows XP on my computer. And I currently don't have internet service at home because of this. My OEM disk from Microsoft may not arrive for two weeks.

In otherwords updates may be sparse for the next little while.

February 16, 2005,

I'd like to welcome Taishi to the boards, although he's an older member, but we'll get that sorted out soon enough ;) .

It turns out I didn't need to reformat my computer after all. It was a winsock/router problem. So I'm good to go for the next little while.

Reading Week is coming up, although I'm going home for half of it, the other half will be spent catching up on some homework. However, I should be able to sneek another day or two into the next site design. Which has yet another design change....

February 27, 2005:

Well, I didn't get any homework done (I actually got locked out of my house Friday evening and I had to work on Saturday), but I did do a little more for The Project ;) .

Here are the first two prototypes of the repeating background for the next design:

Blue
Color

They are also an introductory look to what the wallpapers may look like. I'm partial to the Blue, meaning no additional colors, but the Color is more diverse. I'd appreciate some feedback on which you prefer.

Also, at approx 250 Kb each, that is unreasonable for a tiled background image on a website. Unfortunately the color count is around 26,000, so GIF isn't an option. I've asked before, but if anyone knows of any tools that reduce image file size without loosing much image quality please let me know. Otherwise I will have to play with the glossy percentages, since it's a background that won't be sacrificing much, but I'm a stickler for quality. It's kinda ironic that I've placed a fair amount of detail into the work, but you will only be able to see bits and pieces at a time. I suppose that's why I'm offering it as a wallpaper as well.

Speaking of details, if any of you believe that reducing the details of the piece won't be an issue, and may help the file size as well, let me know that too. If simplifying is recommended then I will do so.

Next, the foreground and a brand new menu system. I just hope I can tweak the current one without too much hassle.....

April 17, 2005,

bobn64 has informed me that although he is in contact with his webhost, www.bubblegumcrisismovie.com may remain down for a week.

I'm wrapping up my last few days of this semester, with one exam left on April 28th, so I'm hoping to fit some more time in on the site redesign before my summer classes begin May 9th. It's going to be another rough summer juggling both class and work.

Aug 6, 2005:

I have been working on the new site design in length up to July, however this Summer has not gone as planned. And now I'm in the process of searching for a new rental suite for Sept 1st.

I also discovered that when I uploaded the site to bobn64's new webspace some of the images were lost or simply not displaying properly. I don't understand why.

With Microsoft's IE7 now in Beta 1, I'm hoping that their improvements in CSS will help make the site menu system easier to implement. And especially hoping that I can scrap all the javascript as well. The problem is IE7 is only being ported to WinXP SP2 and Vista, which means it may make the CSS and JS even more complicated as I have to differentiate between IE6 and IE7. Sigh, it never ends.

Nov 17, 2005:

I haven't worked on the site since August. This semester has been a nightmare. I can't tell you how many 72 hr binges I have done with little or no sleep. In the end it should be worth it, as all I have left is one semester and my internship to complete my degree.

I've decided to implement a weblog system into v4 of the site and scrap the forums all together. Using the comments feature will be enough for any interaction on the site. As much as I wanted to see this forum used to it's full potential, I understand that there is a lack of interest perhaps in the concept or lack of progress on my part.

As a note, Michael Uslan, executive producer of the Batman franchise, has agreed to produce an American live action adaptation of Cyborg 009. The article can be found at ITOCHU Corporation. With producers such as this, the dream may still become a reality.

Sept 07, 2006

I am now one assignment away from completing Bachelor of Fine Arts New Media. Soon I will have time to continue development of the project.

New designs for the site have been created. It is a currently a simple two column layout with navigation on the left as per the current site. However, I have redesigned it for a centered static width, rather than the current liquid layout.

The banner(s) is much more colorful than previous designs reflecting a more conceptual design. If I can develop an easy to use style switcher visitors will be customize their experience by choosing one of four banners (one for each KS) already finished. The default will remain Priss.

The content of the site hasn't been updated for a while, so the new site will not be a full transition from one layout to the next like previous "versions" as I will be updating sections as they are uploaded. I have spent a lot of time recently researching new artists to include on the music section. Finding female lead vocals in electronic rock/jrock remains as difficult today as it was five years ago.

March 30, 2007:

Haven't choosen a CMS to create the layout template with yet. Currently considering Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress.

I found something else of interest though: Noah's Bubblegum Crisis 3D Music Video.

Although I find his animation to be a little Appleseedish (I loved Appleseed by the way, despite some of the character animation flaws), it shows promise of what 3D rendered hardsuits may appear like. Far better than I could do in my early career, but then again I don't intend to animate, just write and produce is possible.

September 8, 2007:

Just wanted to post this article about WB and Toby Maguire adapting Robotech/Macross into an American live action franchise. I suppose with Dreamwork's success with Transformers WB had to find a similar franchise of its own.

This bodes well for BGC because of it's own similarities and Hollywood's willingness to invest into anime adaptations. And like the legal difficulties behind Robotech BGC has it's share as well, but if WB can successfully license Robotech it means it should be possible to option BGC.

Do I want to see BGC produced with a $200M budget? Not really. I have discussed 3D CGI in the past and with the progressive successes of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sin City, and 300 green screen technologies have evolved and production costs remain low such as 300 at $60M.

I fully believe that an entire BGC trilogy can be produced with $150M, not including advertising, filmed simultaneously much like The Matrix trilogy, but unlike Lord of the Rings. I say this because in my opinion it's a better business practice. That being said I can't see an adaption of Moonlight Rambler/Red Eyes not being compared to an equivalent of Empire Strikes Back for the Star Wars trilogy.

November 25, 2008:

Anime News Network has news that shall make all us BGC fans happy:

AIC has licensed a multi-million dollar live-action adaptation to Singapore's Cubix International PTE Ltd.

Original Press Release (in Japanese)

The proposal is to have an American release in 2011. I'm curious to know what may happen to this domain before then?

March 8, 2009:

I updated the forum skin to better match the colour scheme of the new site version. And yes I have a working prototype completed. However, I am updating the pages correcting grammar, adding and removing content, etc. rather than just a simple copy and paste.

There is some minor JS I need to code to complete the navigation, but I'll update the directory before then making the live site a work in progress. For example the migration to PHP and eventually a CMS as discussed before. It's unfortunate that the site update will effect Google page rank, but in time it should be found easily again.
